I feel like the most amazing things come from staring at an opened fridge for too long. I had some boxed banana milk in the fridge and on a whim, added it to my matcha latte in place of my milk and I honestly feel like my life was changed. This banana bread matcha latte was such a wonderful treat that I had to make it again and share it with you!

  • There are a few ways to make this banana bread matcha recipe. I mentioned boxed banana milk, which is the most convenient, but not everyone can buy that at their local grocery store. You can also make this with my homemade banana milk (or roasted banana milk!), but this specific recipe uses my homemade banana syrup recipe as I can use the syrup in a few other recipes throughout the week. Either way, there are so many ways to make this matcha!

Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make banana bread matcha.

matcha powder  a finely grounded powdered green tea, matcha is full of antioxidants and health benefits! Make sure to good good quality matcha powder for the best results. I recommend using ceremonial grade matcha as it’s made with the premium, first harvest of the year. Ceremonial matcha has a deep green color and tastes more rich and more vibrant. Culinary-grade matcha may taste more bitter.

banana syrup — you can use store-bought or make homemade banana syrup by simmering a banana with sugar and water and then straining it. Alternatively, you can skip this by using banana milk!

cinnamon — I like to add a pinch of cinnamon. Keep in mind that the cinnamon doesn’t really dissolve into the drink, so don’t go too heavy handed!

milk — I like to use cows milk, but you can use any milk of your choice. Oat milk pairs great with this!

How to Make Banana Bread Matcha

  • Using a fine-mesh strainer, sift the matcha into a small bowl.
  • Add the hot water to the bowl and whisk the matcha vigorously in an M shape until the matcha is frothy and there are no clumps.

  • To a glass, add 1 (or 2) tablespoons of banana syrup, cinnamon, and milk. Stir to combine.
  • Add the ice (if using) and top it off with the matcha. Stir well to combine and enjoy!

Recipe Tips and Notes

  • You cannot skip sifting the matcha powder as it improves the taste and texture of the matcha.
  • Did you know that matcha is simply powdered tea leaves? Due to this, it may not dissolve entirely in water, resulting in some visible flecks of matcha in your mixture. But no need to worry, this is completely normal!
  • You can adjust the amount of water and milk added to the iced latte depending on how creamy you prefer your latte.
  • For good quality matcha, I like purchasing from Ippodo Tea, but sometimes I get dinged by duties. If you’re Canadian, Matsu Kaze Tea is a great alternative for Japanese matcha!

Tools to Make Matcha

  • matcha bowl (chawan) — when preparing matcha, any bowl can be used for whisking. However, it is important to choose a bowl with high walls to prevent the matcha from spilling out. A spout is also useful for easy pouring of the matcha. I have this beautiful ceramic bowl from ceramic artist Yutaka Ono.
  • bamboo whisk (chasen) and whisk stand — a whisk is essential for matcha as it will whisk out the clumps and make the matcha frothy. If you do not have a bamboo whisk, you can use a small kitchen whisk or an electric whisk for frothing milk. If that’s still not an option, you can always add the matcha to a mason jar with the water and shake vigorously. Before using the bamboo whisk, it’s recommended to soak it in warm water for a few minutes. This helps to soften the bristles and prevent them from breaking during use. The whisk stand is there to help the bamboo whisk retain its shape as it dries. The whisk can become moldy or crack if not dried properly.
  • tea sifter — you’ll need a tea sifter (or any small sifter) to help remove any clumps from the matcha powder.
  • bamboo tea scoop or ladle — or a measuring spoon of sorts. You’ll need it to scoop the matcha and to push the matcha powder through the sifter.

Ingredients

  • teaspoons matcha
  • ¼ cup hot water, 176°F (80°C)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons banana syrup, *see notes
  • ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ to 1 cup milk, or non dairy alternative (warmed for a hot latte, cold for an iced latte)
  • ice cubes, optional

Instructions

  • Sift the matcha into a small bowl. Add the hot water to the bowl and whisk the matcha vigorously in an M shape until the matcha is frothy and there are no clumps.

  • To a glass, add 1 (or 2) tablespoons of banana syrup, cinnamon, and milk. Stir to combine.

  • Add the ice (if using) and top off the drink with the matcha. Stir well to combine and enjoy!
